Eight eager Grimesters met at the Chequers, some becoming slightly less eager when they pulled up to see that those in the know had brought road bikes ..... Spinner had "meant" to send out an email, but hey surely people remembered from four years ago! Gadget, being forewarned in a casual aside on Saturday, had elected to put semi slicks on his MTB and pump them up to a silly pressure. Gricer, Olivio and Silent Running had no warning at all so were in full MTB mode, particularly as the Chequers start/finish had inferred a Leigh hill excursion. Luckily, Olivio had decided at the last minute to come out on his new hardtail, so at least had gears.
After a cheeky one, the group set off at a furious pace, with some record speeds being recorded (44MPH) down Pebblecombe Hill by those on "Racers". The route proved fast and largely flat, and despite frequent protestations was enjoyed by all. Near the halfway turnaround point (The Frog) the group became aware that Grantie was some way back fixing a puncture. After some debate, the immortal two words were uttered, and after Munch had rang him and explained in more than two words the group headed for the Frog.
After some Lycra abuse from the locals, an attempt to press gang the Grimesters into the pub quiz and a round of Harvey's Sussex, Grantie showed up in time to down a pint. The group then headed back, retracing the route. Again, new speed records were set on Pebblecombe Hill - slowest ascent. It was noted that Silent Running had indeed gone silent, as all available power was diverted to the legs.
The Chequers was reached with time to spare, 10:15. After a few drinks and nonsense talk, the last bell was heard which prompted Spinner to suggest heading to Mr "Chemical" Ali's - a warm welcome always assured at 11:10. So everyone headed for home instead.
